We spoke with Miya's mum to find out more about Miya and why she became a MedicAlert member:

How and when was she diagnosed?

Our daughter, Miya, who is now 7 years old, was born with duplex kidneys, a complex condition that has required her to undergo five surgeries to date, with more to come. Due to her kidney issues, Miya cannot have ibuprofen, as it could harm her remaining kidney, which functions at only half its capacity.

Miya also struggles with severe asthma, which was diagnosed when she was younger.

How has MedicAlert helped in her day-to-day life?

Her medical bracelet prominently displays both of her conditions. As parents, we find great comfort in knowing that Miya has her medical information readily accessible when she visits friends' houses, goes on school trips, rides horses, or participates in gymnastics competitions. While she can't wear the bracelet during gymnastics, we attach it securely to her bag so that people can still see it. This allows others to be aware of Miya's medical conditions in case she falls ill or requires assistance.

Final words...

For us, having the MedicAlert bracelet for Miya has been a real lifesaver. It has given her the freedom she deserves while growing up, without constant worry or anxiety about her health. We are immensely grateful to have the medical ID, as it provides us with peace of mind and ensures that Miya's medical needs are known and understood. Thank you so much for this invaluable resource.
