How MedicAlert can help members with severe allergies

Many people are allergic to painkillers or antibiotics that are often given in an emergency. Knowledge of allergies may explain the cause of a collapse and informs healthcare professionals of potential problems with a person's airway. Without prior knowledge of the allergy, a person's condition could deteriorate and they could go into shock without preventative measures in A&E. If a person has a latex allergy it's important that healthcare professionals know as much of the equipment used in an emergency environment means contact with latex.

What is an allergic reaction?

An allergic reaction can be anything from a runny nose and itchy eyes that is commonly associated with hay fever, to breathing problems that can be associated with severe allergic reactions, also known as anaphylaxis which can be life-threatening if not treated immediately.

Allergies can be split into the following types:

  1. Severe allergies and anaphylaxis
  2. Skin allergies
  3. Respiratory allergies
  4. Food allergies
  5. Rubber/latex allergies
  6. Drug allergies
  7. Allergies to wasp and bee stings

For severe allergies that have caused anaphylaxis, you may need to carry around an adrenaline auto-injector. This can literally save your life... and so could MedicAlert I.D. jewellery. Alerting emergency responders to your severe allergies can help you to communicate your allergies in emergency situations.

Thanks to MedicAlert, our members with severe allergies are able to live a normal life. Here is what they have to say about their membership:

Olivia Strang   "The fact that her notes can be updated as her conditions change is important. If anyone needed to find out about her conditions, and she was unable to communicate for herself, I am confident the professional looking after her would have access to the correct up to date information they require by calling the emergency number on her disc".
Olivia Strang's parents
Mandy Marriott   "It offers a person security and peace of mind that if anything happens to them people will be informed and it gives a person more confidence. I would recommend MedicAlert for other people in a similar situation with severe allergies."
