MedicAlert saves epilepsy patient!
Unconscious after suffering an epileptic seizure on the bus, a mum's life was saved by a passenger that spotted her MedicAlert bracelet.
Cathy Barton, 46, from Newport was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was two years old. The difficulty of growing up with epilepsy impacted one every aspect of Cathy's life; her parents didn't understand her condition and Cathy found it extremely hard to make friends leading to years of depression. At 34, Cathy was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and since the age of 21 she has suffered with hypertension.
A couple of weeks ago Cathy was waiting for the bus when she began feeling unwell. As Cathy sat down on the bus she suffered a complex partial seizure resulting in loss of consciousness. Cathy recalls the incident, "One minute I was sat on the bus, then I remember hitting my head on the window and the next thing I know is I'm at hospital and paramedics are talking to me asking me questions".
Such incidences are not unusual for Cathy, "I have, on average, 4 to 6 attacks a month where I lose consciousness and awake to find paramedics or people surrounding me. My MedicAlert Emblem is undoubtedly a life saver in these situations as paramedics have an immediate understanding of my condition and how to treat me. My husband advised me to wear a MedicAlert Emblem and it is the best piece of advice I've been given"
Chris Lunn from MedicAlert says:-
‘Cathy's story reminds us how important the MedicAlert service is for those with hidden medical conditions and allergies. At a time when you are unable to communicate who you are, or what medical condition you have, the MedicAlert Emblem provides life saving information for you.
‘MedicAlert members have a wide range of conditions including diabetes, epilepsy, cardiac conditions and allergies. MedicAlert also provides a life-saving service for those with a host of other less common medical conditions.'
