MedicAlert Real Life Stories....

Brenda is 65 and has been a member of MedicAlert for many years, here she tells us about her personal story and how MedicAlert helps to give her and her family piece of mind living with the conditions that she has.

A chance conversation one afternoon led Brenda Weston, 65, to MedicAlert. Following the diagnosis of a variety of allergies, Brenda was speaking with her cousin who is partially disabled and has been a member of MedicAlert for many years. With the knowledge that her allergies would be unknown by responders in the event of an emergency, Brenda decided to join MedicAlert herself. That was eight years ago and she remains a member to this very day.

Having always been an extremely active women it came as a huge shock, when in 2013 after enduring several falls and many broken bones, Brenda was given the diagnosis that she had developed Osteoporosis. This condition diagnosis meant that she would be prone to further broken wrists or elbows unless she slowed things down a bit, it was most important to take the steps required to ensure her health remained good and that her capabilities weren’t limited any further.

Following the diagnosis of Osteoporosis Brenda was concerned when she started to develop slight shakes throughout her body. With a history of Parkinson’s on her father’s side of the family, both her father and grandfather had the condition, it made sense for her to have the test. This was quite a daunting time however she knew how important it was to get a speedy diagnosis.

Finding medication to treat both Osteoporosis and Parkinson’s that wouldn’t trigger any of her allergies was one of the most difficult tasks for the doctors treating Brenda. She now takes several medications and is undergoing constant research to find an alternative to the current medical patches that she wears daily.

Earlier in 2016 wasn’t a great time when in addition to the allergies, Osteoporosis and Parkinson’s Brenda found herself being told she had Coeliacs disease.

Despite all these setbacks, Brenda is a firm believer of living life to the full and although she has had to make some changes to her day-to-day life her conditions weren’t going to stop her from keeping her hands full and her mind busy! To keep life as active and fun as possible Brenda spends her time with her elderly mother, who is 89, and enjoys her weekly visit to the local Salvation army group where she has many friends.

Family is incredibly important to Brenda and her husband. They have a wonderful son, daughter-in-law and two amazing grandchildren. Membership of MedicAlert not only provides Brenda with peace of mind, but also reassures her family that in the event of an emergency her complex medical history will be understood and dealt with accordingly.

Brenda is quick to reiterate that although life can be frustrating at times she doesn't let it get her down. Brenda believes that being a member of MedicAlert has given her the ability to live her life to the full with the knowledge that should she ever be in an emergency she will be protected.
