From the heart: supporting life with a heart condition

20 February 2026 MedicAlert

February is Heart Month, a time to raise awareness of heart conditions and the importance of being prepared for life’s unexpected moments. Millions of people in the UK live with a heart condition, many of which are not immediately visible. While experiences differ, one thing remains the same: in an emergency, clear and accurate information can make all the difference.

Understanding heart conditions

Heart conditions come in many forms and affect people of all ages. Some are present from birth, while others develop later in life. Although each condition is unique, they often require fast and informed responses in emergencies.

Some commonly recognised heart conditions include:

Arrhythmias

These affect the rhythm of the heartbeat, making it too fast, too slow or irregular. Conditions such as atrial fibrillation may require specific treatment considerations in an emergency setting.

Atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) means your heart's upper chambers (atria) quiver or twitch instead of beating effectively, causing an irregular, often rapid, and inefficient heart rhythm, which can lead to palpitations, breathlessness, fatigue, and dizziness.

Angina

Angina (or angina pectoris) is chest pain or discomfort caused by the heart muscle not getting enough oxygen-rich blood, usually due to narrowed coronary arteries from coronary artery disease, acting as a warning sign for heart problems like heart attack.

Heart failure

Despite the name, heart failure does not mean the heart has stopped. It means the heart is not pumping as efficiently as it should. Emergency teams benefit from knowing this diagnosis alongside any related conditions.

Why emergency information matters

In a medical emergency, seconds count. Stressful situations can make it difficult to communicate clearly, especially if someone is unconscious, confused or unable to speak. For people with heart conditions, this can delay critical decisions if responders are unaware of underlying risks.

How MedicAlert supports people with heart conditions

MedicAlert provides a simple but powerful way to ensure vital health information is always accessible. Our recognised emblems alert emergency professionals that there is important medical information available, even if the wearer cannot communicate. With MedicAlert, members can have their heart condition clearly recorded, along with other essential details such as implanted devices, medications, allergies or emergency contacts. This information is supported by our 24 hour emergency helpline, giving responders access to accurate records when they need them most.

Heart Month and beyond

This February, Heart Month reminds us of the importance of understanding heart conditions and supporting those who live with them. Whether a condition is lifelong or newly diagnosed, clear communication and preparedness can help protect what matters most. At MedicAlert, we are proud to support people with heart conditions by helping ensure their health information is always accessible. Your safety, always in reach. Wear Your Confidence
