PCOS is now PMOS: What this means for your MedicAlert ID

13 May 2026 MedicAlert

You may have recently seen that Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is now being referred to as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).

While the name has changed, the condition itself has not. If your MedicAlert ID currently says PCOS, there is no need to worry. Healthcare professionals, paramedics and emergency responders will still understand what PCOS means and will continue to recognise your condition in an emergency.

At MedicAlert, we understand that changes to medical terminology can feel uncertain. Our priority is making sure your health information remains clear, accessible and reassuring.

Why has the name changed?

The move from PCOS to PMOS is designed to better reflect the true nature of the condition.

For many years, the term "Polycystic Ovary Syndrome" has been criticised for being misleading. Despite the name, not everyone with PCOS has ovarian cysts, and the condition involves far more than reproductive health alone.

PMOS highlights that this is a complex, long-term endocrine and metabolic condition that can affect hormones, insulin regulation, fertility, weight, cardiovascular health and mental wellbeing.

The updated terminology aims to:

  • Improve understanding of the condition
  • Support earlier and more accurate diagnosis
  • Encourage more comprehensive care
  • Reduce misconceptions surrounding ovarian cysts alone

What should you do if your MedicAlert ID says PCOS?

The good news is that you do not need to replace your ID urgently.

Medical professionals will still recognise PCOS and understand the condition associated with it. Your current engraving remains valid and helpful in an emergency.

However, we do recommend updating your MedicAlert medical record to reflect the new terminology when convenient. PMOS is now available within our medical dictionary, making it easy to amend your records online.

Updating your record helps ensure:

  • Your information stays current
  • Healthcare professionals see the latest terminology
  • Your medical history reflects evolving clinical understanding
  • Future engravings or replacements can use the updated name if preferred

Should you replace your engraved ID?

For most members, there is no immediate need to replace an engraved ID that states PCOS.

If your ID still fits well, remains readable and accurately represents your condition, it can continue to be worn with confidence.

You may wish to update your engraving in the future if:

  • You are ordering a new ID
  • Your current ID needs replacing
  • You would prefer your engraving to reflect the updated terminology

Our team can support you with engraving updates whenever you are ready.

Confidence in every emergency

At MedicAlert, we know that medical language evolves. What matters most is that your essential health information remains accessible when it matters most. Whether your ID says PCOS or PMOS, your condition is still recognised and understood by healthcare professionals
