Some examples of this disease include: Emphysema Chronic Bronchitis Refractory (non-reversible) Asthma A study in 2012 has estimated that 1.2 million people in the UK have COPD, making it the second most common lung disease, behind asthma. The majority of affected are people over the age of forty who have a history of smoking, one of the primary causes of the disease. Other contributors to this disease is long-term exposure to harmful fumes, dust, toxic waste and air pollution; all of which will damage the lungs when frequently inhaled. The symptoms for COPD include: Increased shortness of breath Frequent coughing (with and without mucus) Increased breathlessness Wheezing Tightness in the chest Frequent chest infections To raise awareness of this progressive disease, The British Lung Foundation have created a 5 minute 'Breath Test' for everyone to take part in.
