Medical ID bracelets are often regarded as the main source of emergency information for those with serious allergies, underlying health conditions, and long term or chronic issues. However, having additional pointers to your ID can help those caring for you in an emergency identify them even quicker. Here at MedicAlert, we stock a range of versatile and varied medical ID accessories that you can wear or factor into your every day routine. One of the most popular of these is a car sticker – drawing the attention of emergency services or those individuals helping you in an emergency and letting them know that there is crucial information on your person that they need to look for.

This is the story of Jon and how a car sticker saved his life.

Since the age of 22, I have had lived with Type 1 Diabetes, which really restricts the way I live my life. I could suffer heart problems or even a stroke at any point, so I get really worried about leaving the house.

In late 2021, I was in a car accident and while it wasn’t fatal for any of the individuals involved, I was taken in an ambulance to the local hospital after suffering significant blood loss and concussion after hitting my head on the passenger window. While we were lucky the accident wasn’t more serious, I likely wouldn’t have made it that far without the intervention of other motorists who spotted that I had a medical ID bracelet on and managed to use the number on it to identify my health condition.

Not only did this information let them know that they needed to keep a close eye on me while awaiting the ambulance and emergency services, but they also passed the information on to the attending ambulance team who were able to administer appropriate treatment at the scene and beyond.

When police had a chance to speak to the motorists, they acknowledged that it wasn’t only my custom medical bracelet which drew their attention to my diabetes, but that it was also the medical ID car sticker that I have always fixed to my car. Knowing about the fact that I have diabetes is especially crucial because the signs are not always obvious and can be confused with other conditions.

Seeing and recognising the bright red sticker with the bold white font, the motorists were alerted to check my pulse points for the personalised medical bracelet - something which we believe saved my life.

Following this event, I would recommend that everybody should invest in this car sticker, especially if they have a potentially debilitating or life threatening condition which can impact the way they respond to or receive treatment in different situations. It’s such a small amount of money, and such an inoffensive sticker, yet it resonates with people around the world and really can save your life.

Diabetes is just one of the medical conditions which can be isolated through carrying a medical ID bracelet or accessory, with other common ailments that our clients and customer have including diabetes, heart conditions, dementia, and more.

While the bracelet and other jewellery items are fitted with the unique personal reference number that should be used to uncover the information, supplementary accessories such as our MedicAlert car stickers are designed to draw attention to the presence of critical and vital medical information.

In the case of Jon, access to this information meant that the immediate people surrounding him could watch to make sure he did not have an diabetic episode while awaiting the emergency services. It also empowered them to communicate his condition to the ambulance team, allowing them to fast track their treatment and get Jon the help he needed as quickly as possible.

Here at MedicAlert, we aim to make your medical information as accessible as possible, keeping you safe and ensuring that in an emergency you are exposed to the right and most effective treatment as quickly as possible. Read more stories like this on our blog page and across our website.
