“Peace of mind for me, and for my family.”

When Amanda was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a teenager, her parents wanted to make sure she had the reassurance and protection she needed as she headed off to university. Her father, also living with type 1 diabetes, knew the risks and encouraged Amanda to join MedicAlert. For them, it was about peace of mind - not just for Amanda, but for the whole family.

“My parents were concerned because I was going off to university. They wanted to make sure that everybody knew, and MedicAlert gave us all peace of mind.”

That peace of mind became invaluable years later. Shortly after giving birth to her son, Amanda’s blood sugars became unstable. One day, she had a car accident and was unconscious by the time the ambulance arrived.

Thanks to her MedicAlert ID, paramedics immediately knew she was type 1 diabetic and recognised that she was experiencing a hypoglycaemic episode. They were able to act quickly and give her the right treatment.

“They looked at my MedicAlert and thought, ‘Okay, this lady’s type 1 diabetic. It could be a hypo she’s having.’ And it was. That bracelet made sure they treated me correctly when I couldn’t speak for myself.”

MedicAlert has also given Amanda reassurance about another serious health risk: her severe allergy to aspirin. With no epipen available when she was first diagnosed, she relied on her ID to make sure healthcare professionals knew never to give it to her.

Today, Amanda says she would encourage anyone with a serious condition to become a MedicAlert member:

“If you’ve got a condition that’s serious and could have dangerous consequences, I’d definitely say: have it. For me, MedicAlert is all about peace of mind - for myself and those around me.”

Amanda’s MedicAlert Story: Living with Type 1 Diabetes

When Amanda was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, her parents encouraged her to join MedicAlert for peace of mind. Years later, that decision proved life-saving when she was involved in a car accident and became unconscious. Thanks to her MedicAlert ID, paramedics instantly understood her condition and treated her correctly.
