Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes your blood sugar level to become too high. There are a number of different types of diabetes, the most common of which are:
TYPE 1 - where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin.
TYPE 2 - where the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body's cells do not react to insulin1.
The numbers of people affected by diabetes are worrying: over 4.7 million in the UK, including almost 1 million people who don’t know they have it, because they haven’t been diagnosed yet2. Over 90% of those affected are living with type 1.
Over a long period of time, high glucose levels in your blood can seriously damage your heart, eyes, feet and kidneys. However, with the right treatment and care, you can live a full, independent life after being diagnosed3.

We recommend anyone with diabetes to wear a medical ID. A person will become unable to communicate during an emergency so wearing a piece of jewellery will help the first responder to identify the condition and what medical treatment is needed. Wearing a medical ID will also give peace of mind to the person and their loved one.
To receive your medical ID, you will need to become a member of MedicAlert. To do this, either call our team on 01908 951045 or join online via our website.
Engraved on your medical ID jewellery is your membership number, the 24/7 emergency helpline number and your most vital information, so we can engrave details about your medication.
