“A stroke in my 30s was never something I thought would happen to me.”

Amy, known on social media as @mimilouj, shares her experience of life after a stroke - raising awareness of underlying heart conditions and what it really means to navigate recovery at a young age.

But her story isn’t what people expect.

Before her stroke, Amy was a fitness content creator - young, active, and outwardly very healthy. Having a stroke in her 30s was something she never saw coming.

It forced her to rethink her health, her safety, and how she moves through everyday life.

While she’s now had her heart condition treated and is on the right medication, there are still important parts of her medical history that need to be understood in an emergency.

She also has a device in her heart, which means certain procedures - like MRIs - need to be handled very carefully.

So although life has moved forward, there’s still an ongoing responsibility to make sure that information is accessible if it’s ever needed.

Living with the unknown

For Amy, one of the biggest challenges is the unpredictability.

Emergencies don’t always come with warning - and when something feels even slightly similar to what she experienced before, it can be incredibly unsettling.

Even during everyday things like staying active or going out for a hike, there’s an added awareness that if something were to happen, people around her would need to understand her situation quickly.

It’s not about limiting her life.

It’s about making sure she can live it safely, and with confidence.

“Not only do I think it looks cool, it just gives me that bit of extra peace of mind."

Why Amy wears a MedicAlert ID

That’s why Amy wears her MedicAlert ID.

It holds key information about her medical history - including her stroke, her heart condition, the anti-platelet medication she’s on, and the device in her heart.

These are all things that could be critical in an emergency, particularly where certain treatments or scans need to be handled differently.

For Amy, it’s about knowing that if something were to go wrong, the right information is there when it matters most.

Confidence to keep moving forward

Whether she’s out hiking or just getting on with her day, wearing her MedicAlert ID means she can focus on living - not worrying about what could happen if something went wrong.

It’s a small thing, but it removes that constant “what if” in the background.

Sharing her story

Through her platform, Amy is helping to challenge assumptions about stroke and heart conditions - showing that they don’t always look the way people expect, and they don’t only affect older people.

Her story is a reminder that while you can’t always predict what’s ahead, being prepared can make all the difference.
