In the seconds after collapsing from a simple snack, four-year-old Julianne could not explain what was happening as her body began to shut down

Julianne Ponan MBE is now a successful entrepreneur and the founder of Creative Nature, but her journey began with a terrifying medical emergency. That single moment in her childhood was the start of a lifelong battle with multiple severe allergies and the constant threat of anaphylaxis. Today, Julianne is an ambassador for MedicAlert and uses her platform to ensure that others living with hidden conditions never have to face an emergency alone.

A childhood diagnosis

Julianne was only a toddler when she first experienced a life-threatening reaction. After snacking on milk and cookies, she collapsed, leading to months of intensive medical testing. At the age of four, she was diagnosed with a complex list of allergies, including peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, chickpeas and lentils. Even everyday items that most people take for granted, such as certain perfumes or skincare products, can trigger a severe reaction for her.

Growing up with these conditions meant that safety had to come first every single day. Whether she is dining out or travelling the world for her business, Julianne must plan for every eventuality. However, she refuses to let these challenges diminish her independence. Instead, she works closely with the Anaphylaxis Campaign to empower others to live their lives with dignity and safety.

Turning an experience into an impact

Julianne founded Creative Nature, an allergy-friendly brand with nutritious vegan products free from the top 14 allergens. She’s also a long-standing campaigner, working with organisations like the Anaphylaxis Campaign and Teal App. Her mission is to help people with allergies live confidently through education, awareness, and advocacy. She also launched SkyRate, an airline rating service that allows passengers to review their experience with airlines to help others with allergies feel safe when travelling.

Your voice when you cannot speak

Julianne wears a MedicAlert ID because it provides the vital link between her and the emergency services. In a situation where she might be unable to communicate, her bracelet speaks for her. It immediately alerts first responders to her anaphylaxis and severe allergies, ensuring she receives the correct treatment without delay.

The MedicAlert service provides Julianne with a level of protection that goes far beyond a standard medical ID. Her membership includes a digital record that stores her full medical history and emergency contacts. This information is accessible 24/7 through our global emergency line, which can provide details in over 100 languages. For someone like Julianne who travels frequently, this global support is life-changing.

Julianne values the fact that MedicAlert is a nurse-led charity. Every time she updates her medical record, a registered nurse reviews the information to ensure it is accurate and clear. This professional oversight gives her the confidence to focus on her career and her passions, knowing that her safety is in expert hands.

“If you have allergies, you deserve to feel safe and understood. MedicAlert helps make that possible.”

Why do Julianne and her mum wear MedicAlert IDs?

Julianne is passionate about the importance of MedicAlert. Her dedication to improving the lives of those living with allergies is tireless. In addition to lobbying the press, social media, and politicians, Julianne founded Creative Nature. She launched a range of healthy, top-14 allergen-free foods, including baking mixes, snacks, and superfoods.

In her role as a MedicAlert Ambassador, she shares her knowledge to raise awareness of how MedicAlert's services can improve and potentially save lives.

"I suffer from anaphylaxis to all nuts, some seeds, and certain additives, so finding a healthy snack that didn’t cause me to stop breathing was a challenge!"

Every day and travel with Julianne

That’s why, alongside her EpiPens, she never travels without her MedicAlert ID. Engraved with her vital details and backed by a 24/7 emergency helpline, it gives her the peace of mind she needs.

As a big advocate for safe travel with allergies, Julianne lists Creative Nature snacks, allergy information cards, and her MedicAlert ID as the essentials when travelling.
