7th June - Raising Awareness, Empowing Lives

Hyperinsulinism Awareness Day, observed on 7th June, shines a light on a rare but serious condition that affects how the body regulates blood sugar. At MedicAlert, we stand with families, individuals and healthcare providers to raise awareness and offer life-saving support, especially in emergencies. Today, we also proudly celebrate our 2 year partnership with The Children’s Hyperinsulinism Charity, whose mission to support families living with this condition aligns closely with our own.

What Is Hyperinsulinism?

Congenital Hyperinsulinism (CHI) is a condition that causes the pancreas to produce too much insulin. This leads to frequent episodes of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), which can be dangerous, especially if left untreated. CHI can affect children from birth and often requires ongoing monitoring and treatment.

Unlike typical hypoglycaemia, the symptoms of CHI can occur unpredictably and may not always be recognised in time. These can include shakiness, confusion, irritability, seizures or loss of consciousness. Because these symptoms can quickly become life-threatening, having clear medical information available is essential.

The Life-Saving Role of MedicAlert

MedicAlert provides critical support for individuals living with hyperinsulinism. Our medical ID service ensures that, in the event of an emergency, paramedics and other first responders are informed immediately of a person’s condition, treatment needs and emergency contacts.

Our members wear an emblem engraved with vital details and a unique ID number, backed by a full medical record securely stored and available 24/7 to emergency responders. This helps avoid delays in diagnosis or treatment, especially important when every second counts.

For people with CHI, this can mean the difference between safe intervention and potentially severe consequences. Whether a child is at school, on holiday or simply out with friends, MedicAlert offers families peace of mind and individuals the confidence to live life fully.

Our Partnership with The Children’s Hyperinsulinism Charity

We are proud to be working alongside The Children’s Hyperinsulinism Charity, a dedicated UK-based organisation that supports families living with CHI. Founded by parents who understand the condition firsthand, the charity offers resources, advocacy and a supportive community for those affected.

The charity works to:

  • Provide practical advice and emotional support for families.

  • Improve awareness and training for medical professionals.

  • Advocate for better access to treatments and specialist care.

  • Fund research to help find a cure.

Together, MedicAlert and The Children’s Hyperinsulinism Charity are helping to ensure that children with CHI, and their families, can feel empowered, protected and supported through every stage of life.

Confidence for Every Moment

On this Hyperinsulinism Awareness Day, we honour the strength of the CHI community and recommit to providing reassurance that’s always within reach. With MedicAlert, you’re never alone! Your condition is known, your care is prioritised and your safety is always accessible.

Your health, always accessible. Your safety, always in reach.
