At 14, Linda Collins experienced a near-fatal anaphylactic shock from a tetanus antitoxin, prompting her parents, Dr. Marion and Chrissie Collins, to create the first MedicAlert bracelet to permanently display her medical information. This innovative idea quickly gained interest, leading the Collins family to establish the MedicAlert charity in 1956, expanding awareness through national campaigns and medical conventions.
MedicAlert introduced a 24-hour phone service, offering wearers' medical history, personal details, and next of kin information through a unique identifier on each disc. By 1961, we expanded internationally to Canada, New Zealand, and the UK in 1964.
With significant support from the Lions Clubs, the awareness of MedicAlert expanded across the UK and Ireland, leading to MedicAlert UK becoming independent from Lions International. Collaborating with the London Ambulance Service, MedicAlert launched a multilingual emergency phone line, and by 1971, MedicAlert Australia was established.
MedicAlert UK currently supports a growing community of over 36,000 members and plays a vital role in safeguarding their health. Last year alone, the organisation responded to more than 700 emergency calls, ensuring timely access to critical medical information when it mattered most. Beyond emergency response, MedicAlert is dedicated to building partnerships with various charities, offering education and resources to emergency services, and raising public awareness about the life-saving importance of wearing a Medical ID. Through ongoing initiatives, MedicAlert helps individuals with medical conditions feel safer and more confident, knowing their essential health information is always accessible in case of an emergency.

As part of our commitment to keeping people safe, we’ve developed a range of charitable programmes to ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to vital medical protection. Here’s how we’re making a difference.
Together with Lions Club International, we provide free MedicAlert IDs and membership to vulnerable children who are living with medical conditions or allergies.
Together with The McLay Dementia Trust, supporting people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s, or other cognitive conditions, to provide a quick and safe return home.
Supporting those with vEDS, Annabelle's Challenge fully funds one year's membership for them and also generously contributes towards their first piece of MedicAlert ID jewellery for added security.
Generous donations from MedicAlert members allows us to support those experiencing financial difficulties, providing free or discounted membership and/or ID jewellery.
